Donald Joseph Nemec, 78 of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, June 12, 2015 at his home. Celebration of life services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 19, 2015 at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW. A Celebration Gathering will be from 2 to 5 p.m., Saturday, June 20, 2015 at Cedar River Landing, located 301 F. Avenue NW. Private family inurnment will be held in Czech National Cemetery. Don was born March 1, 1937 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Joseph and Lenora (Plotz) Nemec. He graduated from Wilson High School in 1955. He then attended the University of Iowa and graduated from Cedar Rapids Business College. He married Joann Johnson on March 1, 1958 at The Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua. Don worked at Iowa Electric for over 18 years. He was a general contractor for many years with Welsh and Welsh Company in Cedar Rapids, until moving to Texas in 1982. While in Texas he was a general contractor for a large insurance company before moving back to Iowa in 1987. He owned and operated Redi Construction, Fort Knox Storage Facility, and most recently was a partner in Cedar River Landing for many years. He enjoyed deer and pheasant hunting, fishing, traveling, talking and sharing stories with his buddies, but most of all the time spent with his family. Don is survived by his wife Joann; children Joseph Nemec (Nancy Gibson) of Arlington, Texas, Justin Alyn of Roanoke, Texas; three grandchildren Jeffrey Joseph Nemec, Rachel Anne Nemec and Channing Elizabeth Baisly-Nemec; his mother Lenora (Robert) Snelson of Cedar Rapids; brother Richard Dennis Nemec (Ken Cameron) of Cedar Rapids; sister Holly (David) Stotelmyer of Cedar Rapids; a daughter-in-law Marilyn Nemec of Irving, Texas; two nephews and two great-nieces; as well as many cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, daughter Julie Ann Nemec, his mother and father-in-law Bea and Larry Johnson, his grandmother Anna Nemec and aunt Bessie Robovsky. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Mercy.
