Donald Charles Detert, 85 of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at West Ridge Care Center. Celebration of life will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 9, 2017 at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW. Burial will be in Shueyville Cemetery, where military rites will be conducted. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until service time Friday at Brosh Chapel.
Donald was born January 6, 1932 in Solon, the son of Charley and Agnes (Fisher) Detert. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Don was united in marriage to Phyllis Kathleen Cook on October 26, 1957 at Knox Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids. Don worked for the City of Cedar Rapids in the Forestry Department for over 42 years. He was a past member of Hanford Post 5, American Legion as well as a 50 year member of the Moose Lodge and served as Governor. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, listening to polkas and was proud of his Czech heritage.
Don is survived by his siblings Wilma Logan of Whittier, California, Wilbur Detert of Cedar Rapids, Vernon Detert of North Liberty; his sisters-in-law Virginia Mackey of Center Point and Joann Detert of Anamosa; as well as nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Phyllis, who died December 26, 2009, his siblings Norbert Detert Martha Mekota, and a brother, Leonard, who died in infancy; brothers-in-law Don Logan and Edwin Mekota.
Memorials may be directed to Unity Point Hospice in his name.
