Donald Lee Berner, 71 of Mt. Vernon, passed away on Thursday, April 28, 2016 at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City. Celebration of Life Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at Seeds of Faith Lutheran Church, located at 798 Brenneman Lane, Lisbon, with Pastor Stephanie Malin presiding. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Church. Burial will be in Mt. Vernon Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements.
Don was born February 1, 1945 in Clinton, the son of Kenneth and Marian (Banthin-Hardersen) Berner. He attended Calamus Schools until he joined the United States Army. During his service, he was critically injured while in Germany. Following his service, he moved to Cedar Rapids and graduated from Cedar Rapids Business College. Don was united in marriage to Martha "Marty" Jean Holmes on August 22, 1970 at First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. He worked at Pennick and Ford, Nissen Corporation and Wausau Homes for over ten years. Don and Marty purchased Midway Lanes in Mt. Vernon on June 1, 1980. They renamed it to Don Mar Lanes, where they owned and operated it until their son Doug purchased the business in August 2008. Don enjoyed bowling, boating, being outdoors in his timber or on the lawnmower and wintering in Florida and Texas following retirement. The time spent with his friends and family was cherished.
Don is survived by his wife Marty; five children Tammy (Brandon) Pitlik of Mt. Vernon, Teresa (Luke) McDermott of Mission, Texas, Tosha (Daron) Rubner of Mt. Vernon, Douglas (Sarah) Berner and Dustin Berner both of Lisbon; eight and a half grandchildren Trenton and Braxton Pitlik, Chloe and Camille McDermott, Brianna, Mazie and Gabrielle Rubner and Dylan Berner.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Kenneth (Debbie) Berner as well as his father and mother-in-law John and Freda Holmes.
Memorials may be directed to the Don Berner Memorial Fund at Mt. Vernon Bank.
