Donald W. Berger, 88 of Fairfax, died Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at Willow Gardens Care Center in Marion. Celebration of life services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW, where full military rites will be conducted. Visitation will be an hour prior to services. A private family inurnment will be in Linwood Cemetery at a later date. Donald was born December 26, 1926 in Toledo, the son of Benjamin and Thelma (Youngman) Berger. Don proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. during WWII. He married Jenny (Kopaitich) Lawrence on July 4, 1981 in Cedar Rapids. Don was a member of the Fairfax American Legion. Don worked at City Cleaners, for over 35 years until retiring in 1993. He then worked at Hope Lutheran Church as a custodian. He loved golfing, bowling, a good cold beer, listening to country music, dancing and spending time with his family. Don was the most loving and kind man. His sense of humor made everyone laugh and comfortable. He will be greatly missed. He enjoyed his grandkids immensely and was always proud to attend their many activities. Don is survived by his darling wife and best friend, Jenny; his children, Lonnie (James) Henderson, Troy Lawrence, Marty Lawrence (Amanda), and Lisa Lawrence (Holly) all of Cedar Rapids, LaWana (Jeff) Anderson of Omaha, Nebraska, Terrie Russell of Des Moines; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his sister, Ruth Larson (Gerald) of Marshalltown, sisters-in-law Helen Fagerland of Marshalltown and Faye Berger of Traer; as well as his many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Merle Berger and Marion Berger, two sisters, Martha (Paul) Benson and Rose Mary (Merle) Hall, and his dogs Shasta and Tiffy. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Hospice of Mercy and Willow Gardens for their wonderful care for Don. Memorials may be directed to either Hospice of Mercy and or the Cedar Valley Humane Society in his name.
