Delores "Doddee" A. Nordeen Sassen died at Mercy Hospice, Hiawatha, Iowa, Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014. She was 78 years old. Delores was born in 1935, in Muscatine, Iowa, to Henning and Esther Nordeen. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Duane Sassen, Bettendorf and two brothers, William and Gene of Davenport, Iowa - owners of 40-year-old Davenport business, Nordeen's Kitchen Center. She is survived by two children, Brent Sassen, Bettendorf, and Dr. Sharon Sassen and her husband Mark Croy, Ely, Iowa; three grandchildren Trey, 11, Camden, 9 and Alexis, 5 and many nieces and nephews. Doddee, as she was known by all, grew up in Muscatine, Iowa, where she was Homecoming Queen at MHS in 1952 and was named Miss Muscatine in the Miss America Beauty Competition in the same year. She received her Associate Degree from Muscatine Community College where she was also crowned Queen of the Sweetheart Ball. She later moved to Davenport before marrying Duane Sassen in 1959. While her children were in school, she went back to college as a non-traditional student at Marycrest College. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in social work. She used her education well, working as a supervisor at Genesis Visiting Nurses for more than 20 years before retiring. As a dedicated Social Worker she always went above and beyond to make sure her clients' needs were being met, often using her personal time to do so. She loved music and loved to sing. She and Duane spent many years as active members and sang in the choir of the First Presbyterian Church in Davenport. She also volunteered for many years at Good Samaritan Nursing Home, singing every Wednesday for their chapel services. She supported numerous Christian charities here in the United States and abroad. After retirement, she enjoyed numerous vacations with her children and grandchildren. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. On Friday, February 21, the family will greet visitors from noon - 1 p.m. with services beginning at 1 p.m. at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge Road, Davenport, followed by a reception at Fellowship Hall, First Presbyterian Church, Iowa and Kirkwood Blvd., Davenport.
