Darold "Dare" Owen Smith, 87 of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, February 06, 2014 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House. Services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, February 10, 2014 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW, with burial to follow in Baker Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, February 9, 2014. Darold was born October 28, 1926, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Thomas and Jessie (Borghart) Smith. He graduated from Wilson High School and joined the United States Navy in 1944. He was a Cook 3rd Class, referring to himself as "Chef", spending most of his time in the Phillipines, until his discharge on July 3, 1946. Darold was united in marriage to Glenda Kroeger on October 26, 1970 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Dare worked most of his years as a salesman of wholesale building products. His passion was golf and he enjoyed gambling at Riverside. Darold is survived by his wife Glenda; son Craig Smith; daughter Sharon (Richard) Mullin; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister Jean Mulvany; brother-in-law Rex Kroeger of Kearney, Nebraska; sister-in-law Doris Smith all of Cedar Rapids; nieces and nephews; as well as his special poodle Snuggles. He was preceded in death by his parents, his twin brother David T. Smith; and his sister-in-law Coleen Kroeger. Memorials may be directed to either Camp Courageous and or to the Cedar Rapids Animal Shelter in his name.
