Colonel Steven Lee Rohlena, 49, of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and formerly of Keystone, passed away of natural causes Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at his home. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 18, 2014 at St. Ludmila Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. The family will greet friends from 4 until 7 p.m. Sunday, August 17, 2014 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW. After services in Iowa, Colonel Rohlena will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery. Steve was born November 15, 1964 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was a 1983 graduate of Benton Community High School, received a Bachelor's degree in Transportation Logistics and ROTC commissioning in 1987 from Iowa State University. He earned his MA in Administration from Central Michigan University while doing graduate study at the United States Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas graduating in 2001. He married his wife, Rita Spreu, on December 6, 2005. In 2011, he received his Master's Degree in Strategic Studies at the US Army War College. Suvivors include his wife, Rita Spreu of Carlisle, Pennsylvania; parents, Marv and Bonnie Rohlena of Keystone; brother and sister-in-law, Jeffrey (Nancy) Rohlena of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; grandmother, Darlene Trachta of Cedar Rapids; niece and nephews. Colonel Rohlena's first assignment was Platoon leader of the 25th Transportation Company, Schofield Barracks in Hawaii from August 1988 through November 1990. He continued his service in Schofield Barracks as the Battalion Logistics Officer for the 124th Transportation Battalion from November 1990 through November 1992. Colonel Rohlena was then stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington serving as Plans and Operations Officer for the United States Army Garrison-Fort Lewis, and Plans Officer for the 593rd Corps Support Group from November 1992 through August 1995. In August 1995, Colonel Rohlena deployed to Haiti for six months and served as the Transportation Officer for the United Nations in Haiti. His follow-up assignment was the Company Commander of the 497th Transportation Company at Fort Lewis, from February 1996 through October 1997. Colonel Rohlena was then assigned as the Transportation Management Officer for the United military Training Mission in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia from October 1997 through October 1998. Following his assignment in Saudi Arabia, Colonel Rohlena went back to Fort Lewis, Washington and served as the Battalion Operations Officer and Support Operations Officer for the Headquarters, 4th Brigade, 91st Division from October 1998 through June 2001. His next assignment took him to Seoul, South Korea where he served as Battalion Operations Officer and Battalion Executive Officer for the 25th Transportation Battalion from June 2001 through June 2003. He then was assigned as the Transportation Officer for the 8th Army Headquarters in Seoul, South Korea from June 2003 through July 2004. In July 2004, he was assigned to Scott Air Force Base, Illinois, where he served as the Joint Mobility Operations Officer and Executive Assistant to the Commanding General, USTRANSCOM from July 2004 through June 2006. Colonel Rohlena was then selected to be Battalion Commander, 25th Transportation Battalion in Seoul, South Korea from June 2006 through July 2008. He then was stationed back to Fort Lewis, Washington and served as the Deputy Commander for the 593 Sustainment Brigade from July 2008 through July 2011. This included a 12 month deployment with the Brigade to Kuwait from April 2009 through April 2010. He served as the Defense Logistics Advisor at NATO in Brussels, Belgium from July 2011 until July 2, 2014 receiving the Defense Superior Service Metal. Currently, he was starting a new assignment serving as Senior Advisor on Strategic Logistics at the US Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Colonel Rohlena's military awards include Defense Meritorious Service Medal, 6 Meritorious Service Medals, 2 Joint Service Commendation Medals, 2 Army Commendation Medals, Joint Service Achievement Medal, 3 Army Achievement Medals, joint Meritorious Unit Awards, 2 National Defense Service Medals, Global War on terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, and United Nations Medal, Air Assault Badge, Parachutist Badge. Steve was a soldier first and loved his country. Every chance he had, he returned to his farm boy roots to rekindle the life he had growing up. he enjoyed doing all the things civilians take for granted: family events, seeing friends on leave, tractorcades, IH shoes, traveling for pleasure, hunting, fishing, and motorcycling. Steve's wit and that twinkle in his eye when teasing will be greatly missed by family and friends.
