Clarissa Alice "Alyce" Rohlena, 96 of Cedar Rapids, went to be with her beloved Lord and Jesus, Saturday, January 18, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center after a stroke, but waited to give her earthly family a chance to say goodbye and squeeze her hands. Celebration of Life services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 25, 2014 at First Church of the Nazarene, located at 3113 1st Avenue SW, with Reverend Tim Carter presiding. Private family inurnment will be in Czech National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, January 24, 2014, at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW. Alice was born September 19, 1917, in Texas to Orville and Clarabell Haney, She met her lifelong love and husband Joseph Lester Rohlena and they were married May l8, l938. Survivors include her son Neil (Karen) Rohlena of Fairfax and daughter Sharon (Virgil) Schminke of Vinton, five grandchildren; Randy (Pat) Rohlena, Renee (Michael) Frazier, Tammy (Jeffery) Rathje, Teresa (Allan) Merchant, Todd (Dawna) Schminke; thirteen great- grandchildren; Justin Rohlena, Allison Rohlena, Casey Netolicky, Amber Frazier, Lindsey Frazier, Matthew (Johnna) Rathje, Joshua (Camela) Rathje, Adam Rathje (Allison Roemig), Robert Rathje, Trisha (Mitchell) Bunten, Jessica Merchant and fiancé Frankie Dulin, Chelsey Merchant, Erica Schminke and three great-great grandchildren with two more on the way. Alice was preceded in death by her husband Joe in 2000, her brothers: Paul, Ed, and Phil Haney and her sister Lyla Alt. Alice was a lifelong member of the Church of the Nazarene and taught Sunday school for many years. Many of her students will remember the parties that she and Joe hosted for them at their house. Alice taught the accordion for many years for Boddicker's School of Music and later for Hiltbrunner's. Alice has been a ten year member of the Iowa Accordion Club and played with the band. She also played the accordion with Neil for nursing homes and other events until 3 years ago when her eyesight failed. Her niece Pat Semelroth, asked Alice, to teach her how to play Pat's mother's accordion, so Alice has been teaching her for the last 4 months. We have lost a great loving Mom, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and Great-Great Grandmother, We love you Alice. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Alice's name may be directed to the donor's choice of charity or to First Church of Nazarene, 3113 First Avenue SW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52405.
