Cheryl Lyne Smith, 63, of Cedar Rapids, passed on at her home on Sunday, May 17, 2026, after a long battle with kidney and heart disease .

Cheryl was born at St. Luke's in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Garrett and Lois Heins, of Palo Ia. Where she grew up going to Benton Community Schools. This is where her love for animals was developed. She loved her cat, riding horses, feeding the squirrels, and collecting unicorns figures. She was always going out of her way to help people. She was always thinking of others. She loved eating out whenever she could. Cheryl enjoyed singing Karaoke with her sister and friends .

Cheryl married and then divorced Clark Nekola of Texas and Brian Smith of Washington.

She preceded in death by her parents, and several aunts and Uncles on both the Heins and Johnston sides.

She leaves behind a sister Lynae Heins, of Cedar Rapids; her son Wesley Towne; fiancee Tony Scheffert, of Cedar Rapids; Aunt Celeste Lane; Uncle Bob, of Minnesota; best friend Sharon Salton; and Sister-in-laws Donna Towne and Lory Novak.

A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held at Just Jules restaurant and Pub on Friday, June 5th, 2026, from 4pm - 7 pm 835 Center Point Rd NE 52402. Come and enjoy refreshments and celebrate her life.
