Charles "Chubb" Litts, 77 of Mt. Vernon, died Monday, February 4, 2008 at his home after a brief illness. Funeral mass will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 8, 2008 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Burial to follow in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery near Solon. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, February 7 at Brosh Chapel in Solon.
Charles was born February 12, 1930 in rural Mt. Vernon, the son of Edward and Floy Grover Litts. He graduated from Mt. Vernon High School. Chubb served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He loved his family and his farm which he worked for 53 years on the Century Pavelka family farm established in 1854. Chubb loved to watch the crops grow and harvest time. Watching cows and calves in the spring with routine trips to the pasture on his quad runner to watch them grow. He spent many years serving on the Linn County Beef Producers Board of Directors. Sports was a big part of his life. Participating himself in high school basketball, holding a record of 36 consecutive free throws during games in Mt. Vernon High. He was proud to serve on the Mt. Vernon school board for 18 years during the time of the now middle school was built. Watching his sons and grandchildren play basketball, football, soccer, volleyball. Traveling many miles to watch them in the hot sun. He enjoyed fishing, garden growing, and NASCAR races. Eating good food, especially kolaches and pie. Having a coffee with the guys at Sutliff for years before his health made it hard. He enjoyed the sun rises and set many days from his Angel Hill home that he loved so much.
Chubb is survived by his wife Jean, sons Brian Litts of Cedar Rapids and Blair Litts of Mt. Vernon; a daughter Barbara Litts of Iowa City; grandchildren Alexus and Brody Litts; nieces Sarah Pavelka and Ann Pavelka Bright; and a nephew Ed Slach.
Chubb is preceded in death by his parents, mother and father in law Leonard and Esther Pavelka, sister Donna and brother in law Clarence Slach, a nephew Jerry Slach, niece Sherry Slach and a brother in law Dwayne Pavelka.
