Carol Ann (Rokes) Stahle, 59 of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, December 10 at Mercy Medical Center from a brief illness. Funeral mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 15 at St. Matthew's Catholic Church with Fr. Mark Osterhaus presiding. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids where there will be a 7 p.m. Catholic Daughters of America rosary. Visitation will also be one hour prior to services Friday at the church.
Carol was born December 25, 1946 in Independence the daughter of George W. and Julia B. (Fosse) Rokes. Carol graduated from Jefferson High School in Independence in 1965. She worked for many years as a nurse's aide before marrying Ron. She married Ronald Stahle April 12, 1969 at St. John's Catholic Church in Independence. Her biggest enjoyment was her role as Grandma. Her greatest happiness was her grandchildren whom she adored and loved so deeply and with whom she was looking forward to celebrating her birthday on Christmas Day. Carol never met a person, stranger or family, that she didn't give a hug. She was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church, Chancel Choir, Resurrection Choir, and Serenaders. She was also a member of Catholic Daughters of America Court #1768 for many years. Carol used her talents and love of cooking, baking, and crocheting for Catholic Worker House, St. Matthew's Church, and Birthright.
Carol is survived by her husband of 37 years, Ron, two daughters Lisa (Dan) Thuerauf of Mt. Vernon, and Lori (Steve) Schnier of Richardson, Texas; her "sweet babies" Jacob, Julia, Christian and Annalise Schnier, and was eagerly awaiting the arrival of Baby Thuerauf in March 2007. Carol is also survived by her two sisters Pat (Ray) Gates of Independence and Norma Gates of Independence; two brothers Harry "Bud" (Marge) VanHorn of Trempalau, Wisconsin and Richard "Dick" (Pat) VanHorn of Chicago, Illinois; sister's-in-law Marjorie Jensen of Cedar Rapids, Dolores (David) McMullen of Azle, Texas and Judi (John) Zachar, Jr. of Holiday, Florida; many nieces and nephews especially Greg (Jane) Gates of Independence, Sue (Ed) Gipper of Fairbank, and Bob (Helen) Gates of Cedar Rapids as well as many great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents George and Julia Rokes; aunt Rose VanHorn; sisters-in-law Louise Frazier and Evy VanHorn; brother-in-law L.E. "Buster" Gates; and mother-in-law Mary Law.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Matthew's Catholic Church.
