Carol Ann Steggall Benson, 55 of Fairfax, died Tuesday, August 19 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy from a lengthy battle with cancer. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 23, 2008 at Clover Ridge United Methodist Church in Walford, with burial to follow in Czech National Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Clover Ridge United Methodist Church and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements.
Carol was born November 27, 1952 in West Bend, Wisconsin, the daughter of Walter and Margaret Milligan Steggall Sr. She graduated from Jefferson High School in 1971. She received her Bachelor of Education from Cornell College in 1975, and her Masters Degree in Counseling from the University of Iowa. She taught physical education at Washington High School in Vinton. Carol worked as an Elementary School counselor in Solon and at Cedar Rapids Nixon and Grant Schools. The last few years Carol and Ryan started a concession business selling Tropical Sno and Lemonade at local fairs and town festivals. Carol was an active member of Clover Ridge United Methodist Church in Walford and attended a weekly small group Bible study. Carol really enjoyed working on vacation bible school at Clover Ridge. Over the years Carol has enjoyed many different activities, especially playing cards with a Womans Card Club, gardening, camping, boating, golfing, hiking, jogging, and sailing.
Carol is survived by her husband Ryan, a brother Walter (Michele) Steggall Jr. of Ely, six nieces and nephews, Chase Steggall, Shana (Randy) Staab, Craig (Karla) Benson, Carrie Benson, Jared (Jennifer) Benson, and Lorissa (Justin) Green.
Carol is preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.
A memorial fund has been established in her name.
