Barbara L. Basemann, 70, of Clutier, died Monday, November 7, 2016 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy following a short illness. A memorial gathering will be held Saturday November 19, 2016 at the Clutier American Legion from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids is serving the family.

Survivors include her children; Tyanna Stephenson (Art Dunkel) and John Rick Sr. (Brenda); grandchildren Matthew, Brooke, John Jr., Jordon and great-granddaughter Layla.

She was preceded in death by her husband Max Basemann, parents William and Gladys Avise, and brothers Billy and Leroy.

Barbara was born September 1, 1946 in Des Moines, the daughter of William Edward and Gladys V. (Underwood) Avise.   She moved to Center Point in 1981 to become their only female police officer.  In 2001, Barbara and Max moved to Clutier where she continued her career in the security field working at Meskwaki Casino and Tama Pack.  Barbara also had a shop in Toledo where she sold knick-knacks and collectibles.  She enjoyed crocheting for family and friends that showcased the Chicago Cubs, Iowa Hawkeyes, and Elvis as well as making baby blankets for her grandchildren.  Barbara also enjoyed going to the casino, relaxing over coffee and lunch with friends, attending garage sales and auctions, and spending time with her grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family or Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Cedar Rapids.
